Tea Lake: Before and After

This week I've been altering a few paintings that are several years old...not BAD paintings, maybe some compositional challenges...but also my palette is more varied now and so I wanted to rework them. I find this process very interesting, so I'm posting before and after versions and would be happy to hear comments from anyone...

On location oil on stretched canvas 15" x 30" C.$950. framed

My first impression was like a time lapse- the tree in the first version died, but now there's new saplings coming up :-)

On looking deeper, it feels like there's still a shadow where the tree used to be and it strikes me as a bit flat- maybe just a little highlight or two like a dapple of light coming through the trees, giving a sense of where the shadow is coming from and allowing you to add a bit of depth to the top part of the rocks.
Just an idea :-)
I love the space and movement in the water.
